ODESUR VELODROME
In January 2012 Iglesis Prat Architects asked
us for a consultancy of a project they were in charge, a cover of a velodrome
located in Santiago de Chile. This project was initially designed as a sequence
of ogival section beams and covered by a rigid material. The excessive weight
of the metal structure and the possibility to use an alternative material
convinced the designers to adapt the existing proposal into a textile membrane
roof.
After our architectural analysis, the first
problem was the high likelihood of rain and snow ponding, because the slope of
the roof was insufficient for a flexible membrane. Consequently we decided to
present an alternative design that meets the requirements of the new material
and the project itself.
We considered these basic points and also
seek formal references for designing. In consequence we design a more elevated
and slender structure that provided the framework for the double-curved
surface. The diagram presented in this first approach was the basis for the
development of the project.
Iglesis Prat included in the proposed a different
perimeter and a sequence of reinforced concrete columns to support metal
structures. We adapted the design and work in various alternatives for the
perimeter.
After a while they defined a rigid material
for the perimeter, leaving only the central cover with a textile membrane.
Cidelsa also supported the development of the holding system for the tensioned
membrane, also the drainage of rain and finally the structural design. We
analyzed the surface with the EASY software and send to the engineering team
the acting loads on the structure for the structural design.
Finally in June 2012 the project was completed
and submitted to public contest for the construction.
