IFAI-IAA Awards, we won!

Ending with the METRO project, Del Sol Station is the last one of line 5, an intermodal station, this means interconnection between the subway and bus system, like the previous ones this project development was under the direction of architects Burmeister (BAC).
Based on the original plans, that show an irregular platform design, determined by the thirteen bus stops, we designed a cover that protects the users from leaving the bus to the entrance of the station. The underground station had only some minor constructions in the upper platform and whether a large open space. The challenge was to adjust the shape of the roof into the existing architectural plan.
We proposed a first alternative (Fig. 01) which did not pleased BAC, then raised a second which was also rejected. BAC then requested us to work with conical surfaces, which finally did not satisfy the requirements. Then after another exchange of ideas, there was an option to work with circular arcs and through this premise I designed the final shape, the one that was finally constructed (Fig. 03).
The challenge was to achieve a good ratio between the height and the transverse arches light of the irregular architectural plan, also I wanted to have few support to achieve more free space. In the pictures you can see how we set up the structure, reinforced concrete supports were placed every twenty meters and the arcs ranged between five and thirty meters between their supports.
I paid particular attention to the design of the reinforced concrete columns, giving them a sculptural character: they have four arms of which are developed cantilever beams and arches and from the top emerge a head that is connected through a backbone (main span) to the opposite column.

Textil roof innovation into Santiago de Chile Metro

This project was led by Burmeister Arquitectos Consultores (BAC), through his management and the belief that using this system was the best alternative, this great project became a reality.

BAC asked us the task of solving the textile roof for four Metro stations. Three of these, Laguna Sur, Las Parcelas y Monte Tabor, had initially been projected based on a sequence of rectangular steel frames covered with reinforced glass, which formed an irregular profile along the platform. Next week I will explain about the fourth station, intermodal Del Sol which has a completely different treatment.

After reviewing several options for the first three stations, we gave two alternatives: the first was based on a half rectangular frame placed on the existing framework put over the first module and then over the rest, making them rotate throughout the station, generating a twisted volume, which in my opinion increased the initially proposed design making it more volumetric attractive.

The second one is simpler, is tracing an ellipse over the rectangular frame and the sequence was generated by giving it a spin and alternately in each of the existing frameworks. BAC finally opted for the second option for Monte Tabor and Las Parcelas stations, then for Laguna Sur asked us to simplify the roof, leaving the ellipses horizontally.
